Why Work With Us?
Designing a landscape is about more than choosing plants or placing a path. It’s about understanding how land, climate, materials, and daily life come together to shape a space that feels natural and lasting.
Working with a landscape designer helps you:
And working with a local designer adds another layer of insight.
After more than seven years creating gardens on Lopez Island, we understand how this landscape behaves. We understand its winds, microclimates, soils, and seasonal rhythms.
We also maintain trusted relationships with local specialists in stonework, irrigation, and lighting, and know where to source the best plants and soil for island conditions.
The result is a landscape designed not just to look beautiful at first, but to thrive here for years to come.
What to Expect
Every property is different, and our design process allows us to thoughtfully respond to the unique character of your land.
We begin with a visit to your property to walk the site together. During this conversation, we explore your goals for the landscape, how you hope to use the space, and any challenges, opportunities, or inspiration you’d like to share. It’s a collaborative meeting where we listen carefully, observe the site, and ask thoughtful questions about how the garden can support your life outdoors.
Next, we take a deeper look at the land itself. At this stage we consider key site conditions including light patterns and sun exposure, existing vegetation, circulation and pathways, views and focal points, topography and grade changes, water movement and drainage, and microclimates across the property. At the same time, our GIS mapping specialist creates a base site plan using county data and satellite mapping tools. If additional measurements are needed, we return to gather them on site. This foundation allows us to begin developing design ideas that respond naturally to the character of the land.
Using the information gathered during site analysis and our conversations with you, we begin developing concept sketches. These sketches explore possibilities for layout and circulation, garden rooms and gathering spaces, hardscape features, and planting areas and structure. We also incorporate any inspiration images, notes, or ideas you’ve shared along the way.
During this meeting, we present the first concept sketches and talk through the design together. This is your opportunity to share what resonates with you, identify elements you’d like to adjust, and discuss materials and garden uses in more detail. We typically present designs in sketch format using Morpholio Trace rather than formal CAD drawings unless requested. This approach clearly communicates ideas while keeping design costs reasonable. At this stage we also begin developing the softscape plan, selecting plants and determining their placement within the design. There may be a few iterations as we refine the plan together.
Once both the hardscape and planting design feel right, we present the finalized plan for review. At this stage we walk through the full design together, confirm materials and layout, and finalize plant selections
After approval, we prepare an installation estimate for the work ahead—unless you plan to use the design to build the garden yourself.
If you choose to move forward with installation, we manage the project from start to finish, ensuring every element is carried out with care and consistency. Installation typically includes coordinating specialized subcontractors (such as stonework, irrigation, or lighting), site preparation, construction of hardscaping including walls, paths, and patios, plant sourcing and delivery from trusted nurseries, installation according to the approved plan, irrigation where needed, mulching, and final soil finishing. At the start of the installation phase, we provide a detailed timeline so you know what to expect as the project unfolds.
Every landscape begins with a conversation.
If you’re ready to explore what’s possible for your property, we’d love to walk the land with you and begin shaping a design that will grow and evolve for years to come.
